"It is no use saying: "We are doing our best. You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary." Winston Churchill
I have always been fascinated by political leaders. Is it the person or the circumstances that makes them great? Or perhaps it is luck or fate? No matter... of late we seem rather short on greatness, particularly in light of the Covid-19 crisis. Sadly, in this snippet of history, our political leaders have been underwhelming, letting a lifetime opportunity seemingly slip through their fingers. History, I am sure will not be kind to them....
There is a bright spot, one person who has best exemplified Leadership in this time of crisis. One person, who has been transparent, tough and truthful with his citizens. One person who was not afraid to take harsh measures and stay the course. One person who had a plan....
This is of course none other than Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Singapore. Having spent February 24 and 25 in Singapore, I realised just how well prepared the nation and its citizens were for Covid-19. When I questioned my usual bellwether (taxi drivers, waiters and hotel staff) about the situation, they repeatedly talked about "trusting our government", and the importance of rules. Others stressed that clear government communications and civism had been key to handling the initial onslaught.
This is the result of terrific political leadership. I offer you one example: the Prime Minister's speech to the nation on March 12, 2020. I encourage you to take 11 minutes to listen to this masterclass in communications.
This man is my Covid-19 Champion because he brought serenity, conviction and truth to his citizens. He offered a path forward in a time of crisis that left no doubt as to the outcome and while the crisis is yet to be over, that "SG United" will win is beyond any Singaporian's doubt.
Bravo.
Few world leader has spoken so clearly and precisely. Kudos to him. The thumb rule: Test, Trace and Isolate- has been followed strongly in SG and they are having the result now. South Korea also did well to contain the spread, they followed test, test and test. But we saw a different approach in the UK and in USA where leaders are reluctant to create awareness, they are worried of democracy, worried to keep people contained! And we will see the result soon in those 2 wealthy nations.
